COO COO CA CHOO, MRS. ROBINSON

FITSNews – July 17, 2007 – We’ve always wondered about La Socialista education reporter Bill Robinson. It’s not that his coverage is “a little bit” partial toward the education establishment, the fact is the articles he writes have more slant to them than the Pyramids at Giza.

For example, Robinson wrote a Tolstoy-esque novel the day State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex visited a local education career fair (complete with fawning descriptions of Rex’s suit and tie choices), yet when a report was released ranking South Carolina last in the nation in graduation rates (again), Robinson didn’t write a single word. Nor did any of his colleagues. Apparently, La Socialista‘s corporate commitment to “public service journalism” and telling “truth to power” only applies when they’re not pushing somebody’s agenda.

We’ve written about Robinson’s unique ability to put the “BS” in “bias” in his education coverage here and here, but for the longest time we couldn’t put our finger on the reason why. Well, grab your socks and hose and pull, people, because it turns out there’s a pretty good reason …

After ignoring our initial request for information, FITSNews received the following e-mail from Robinson yesterday:

My wife is employed as a middle school teacher in Lexington District 2 (Cayce-West Columbia schools). My beat-coverage responsibilities are Lexington districts 1, 3, Lexington-Richland 5 and statewide education issues, which include the state Department of Education, Education Oversight Committee and some legislative coverage. Aside from big-picture articles that include all Midlands districts, I do not cover Lexington District 2’s activities.

Well, that explains a lot. At least Herculean efforts have been undertaken by La Socialista to avoid a possible conflict of interest. You know, kind of like the time the paper hired the former Communications Director for longtime Democratic Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum and promptly assigned him to cover higher education issues.

Interestingly enough, the first person we spoke with at Lexington 2 refused to provide us with any information concerning its employees, but eventually we got on the phone with Human Resources Director Dr. Angie Cooper, who acknowledged it was public information and promised to get back with us.

Assuming she does respond, we’re not going to publish Mrs. Robinson’s name, title and salary information, mind you. It’s all public record, of course, but frankly we don’t have an interest in making her life miserable, especially when we’ve already made our point.

We also don’t necessarily think Mr. Robinson should be forced to resign, although we think what little shred of credibility his paper has left on education issues would be well served by reassigning him to another beat.

Robinson’s columns are as predictable as ol’ Lee “Christian conservatives are splitting state Republicans” Bandy’s regurgitated rantings, which, alas, we won’t be able to enjoy so regularly.

I’m new here (to the blog) and am enjoying it. But, please…give us more Elisha Cuthbert.

2. Billy Chappel - July 17, 2007

You have an uncanny ability to smoke out scoops like this…good work!

3. Rob W. - July 17, 2007

Please tell me he’s actually paid by Howard Rich’s anti-voucher evil twin.

4. Credibility?? - July 17, 2007

Wow! What a scoop! No, not a journalistic scoop. More like a scoop of pond scum. Who cares? Nobody, because it means nothing.

And, after some of will’s more recent “scoops” he is the last person in the world who should be discussing other’s credibility.

But, since will brought up “credibility” let’s talk “credibility.”

Remember will’s recent scoop that a Midland’s elected official has a “Strom problem.” Heard any more from him on that? Nope. He got suckered on that rumor without checking it out. Credible?? Nope.

Don’t forget his allegation about the governor’s laptop and his FOI request to get his hands on the ole flip top laptop. Silly boy should know better. Credible?? Nope.

His latest gut busting scoop was to claim the governor paid off the family in the death of a young “black” girl some time ago. Heard more details from will? You won’t. Credible?? Nope.

And, why was “black” important to the rumor? Hmmm.

Those of us who know will the best know his love/hate relationship with The State goes back quite a while. Check out one of his other silly blogs sometime at idontbelievethestate. It’s pretty sad.

It’s almost as sad as his obsession with Chernoff-Newman Agency. That goes back a ways too, but for completely different reasons.

5. Integrity?? - July 17, 2007

What a hoot! Will folks challenging someone’s integrity! How funny!

6. FITSNews - July 17, 2007

Dear “Vouchers Stink,” “Believe It Not,” “Credibility,”

We stand by all of our stories ’round here. And we’re lazy … so just cuz we haven’t published anything new on certain items that piqued your interest doesn’t mean we’re done w/ them … by any means.

And for probably the millionth time, the blog “I Don’t Believe The State” is run by some old dude out in Lexington County, at least as far as we know. We’ve got nothing to do with that website. Never have. Nor are we employed by SCRG, as you so frequently assert in your posts.

Of course, you’re not getting paid to be accurate, you’re getting paid to try and discredit us. Which is fine … and occasionally fun.

Finally, we’re a blog. We don’t pretend to be impartial because we’re not. That’s what the State claims, though, and we were merely pointing out that they may be a little more partial than they appear at first glance.

7. La Socialista - July 17, 2007

Here are the first lines of a letter The State once published for Will Folks. If Will has so little respect for their credibility, why did he send them this blubbering foolishness? By the way, The State published this for him on their Editorial Page – above the fold.

Seems hypocritical to send such a Letter to the Editor and then question their credibility. And, with his track record he should be nice to them. He may need them again someday to publish his side of some other sleazy Developing… 🙂

“Will Folks: My side of the domestic violence story
By WILL FOLKS
Being arrested for criminal domestic violence has without question been the most painful and humiliating experience of my life. Literally overnight, I went from being a respected public figure with a promising future to having my mug shot plastered on the evening news and the pages of newspapers across the state. Letters to the editor have attacked my character, and even the man I helped elect governor and worked side-by-side with for the past four years has weighed in publicly against me……”
>End Quote<

Well that explains why he hates the governor so much. But, who in their right mind ever considered will a “…respected public figure…”?

Remember that 99% of political consultants give the rest a bad name.

Fits,
Where did you go to school-grades K-12-that is?

9. sic haters - July 17, 2007

sic willie went to hammond academy — a cushy private school in columbia. no wonder he is pushes the voucher scam so hard! so where is your integrity sic willie since you never set foot in a public school.

10. Math Quiz - July 17, 2007

sic haters makes a good point.

And, the governor’s sending his kids to private school.

Let’s see. If the voucher scam credit was 5,000 per child and the governor has x number of children, how many children would the governor have if he got a total voucher scam tax credit of $20,000 to send his children to a “cushy” private school?? Not that he needs it.

Let’s see.
There’s 5 and naught, naught, naught times “x” = $20,000.

Got my shoes off now. Let’s see. 5 goes into 20, and naught, naught, naught goes into naught, naught, naught. Wait, wait. got to start over. 5 goes into 20 – let’s see, 4 times. And we drop the naught, naught, naught. Got it. 42

Wait. The governor would get $20,000 of our tax money to send his kids to school when he could send them to public school?

Vouchers really are a scam!!

11. Will Folks - July 17, 2007

For what it’s worth, I attended Windsor Elementary School (public), E.L. Wright Middle School (public), Spring Valley High School (public), Hammond Academy (private), The Hill School (private), Presbyterian College (private) and the University of South Carolina (public).

Between K-12 and higher ed, I’ve spent 14 years in public education settings – a little more than “setting foot inside” I’d say.

So, how old is the “old dude”? Is he a Client? Please give us his name so we can verify and leave you alone about it. You do seem to know his age and were he lives. Can you tell all of us when his birthday is? Maybe The State will send him a subscription.

Dear sic haters,

We were not flooding his blog. Each of our posts was unique, and we sent other posts inviting him to pick the one he liked the most.

You see, over the last few days will has neglected to post some our intelligent, truthful and often humorous posts. Censoring us! 😦

Will can dish it out, but as you probably know he has a short bad temper, and he really can’t take the heat when people shine the light of truth and credibility on him.

Will was fired from the governor’s office for beating up his girlfriend. Then he elected Thomas Ravenel to the Treasury. Ravenel who is under indictment for cocaine distribution now — and Will is probably next.

Everyone “nose” he has a special place in his heart for the white stuff.

Slimy rumors, a drug problem, violence against women, no credibility (and no clients). What an impressive resume!
