“Not Gay” Senator Resigns September 1, 2007Posted by fitsnews in US Politics.
REPUBLICAN CALLS IT QUITS AFTER RESTROOM INCIDENT
FITSNews – September 1, 2007 – Idaho Senator Larry Craig announced today that he was resigning his seat in the U.S. Senate effective Sept. 30 after allegations surfaced last week that he made homosexual overtures to an undercover cop in a Minnesota airport restroom. Craig pled guilty to disorderly conduct as a result of the incident, but insisted he did nothing wrong and denied that he is a practicing homosexual.
Calling continuing to serve “an unwanted, unfair distraction,” Craig apologized to the people of Idaho.
Not surprisingly, Republicans bashed the hell out of Craig – including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who had previously tapped the Idaho Republican as one of his national campaign’s co-chairmen. Yesterday in South Carolina, Romney called Craig’s behavior “disgraceful.”
This whole thing is pretty sad if you ask us. Republicans clearly can’t be gay, nor can they tolerate “gayness” from one of their own. In fact, the way the GOP immediately fed this guy to the lions is almost as disturbing as the acts he’s accused of. Are we condoning Sen. Craig’s behavior? Nope. Do we think homosexuality is wrong? Absolutely. Is it especially wrong coming from someone who publicly decries it? You better believe it.
But the irony here is that the GOP will probably suffer more spin damage as a result of its reaction to Craig’s public implosion than it will from the fact Craig did what he did in the first place.
