Huckabee’s “Win” In Iowa August 12, 2007

Mike Huckabee

FITSNews – August 12, 2007 – Let’s be honest, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee finishing second in an Iowa straw poll where the top three GOP candidates didn’t even bother to participate doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to be the next President of the United States. What it does mean, however, is that “Huckles” is in the race for the long haul, and that straw poll purchaser winner Mitt Romney had better keep an eye in his rearview as he attempts to break into the top-tier of would-be GOP nominees.

Huckleberry’s surprising second-place finish last night had to disappoint Team Romney by taking attention away from their man, who spent seven figures on the straw poll compared to the paltry $150,000 Huckabee spent. We’re not sure how the cost-per-vote spreadsheet breaks down just yet, but Huckabee clearly got his money’s worth.

And for those of you who think we do nothing but bash on Romney on this website (editor’s note: with good reason), we’d like to point out this isn’t our spin, it’s the Washington Post’s.

McCain is probably getting quite nervous after this. Huckabee’s directly in his rearview mirror, and is likely a lot closer than appears at first glance.

Will, I’ll put down money on a Giuliani-Huckabee or Romney-Huckabee ticket. I’m hoping for Romney-Huckabee, but I’d hold my nose for the Giuliani ticket. You in?

Objects in the rearview are always closer than they appear. Remember that ‘Far Side’ cartoon?

We don’t have a dog in the 2008 fight. We’ll be making our primary endorsements as we get closer to the actual date of the vote, but as of now we don’t have a favorite in the GOP fold.

As for the Democrats, right now we like Bill Richardson although he didn’t help himself in the early debates and is struggling to keep up with the Clinton and Obama juggernauts.

Will, we thought you’d nominate yourself for both parties’ nominations?
