SAMMY SLAMS SIX-HUNDRETH, BUT BASEBALL FANS KNOW BETTER

FITSNews – June 21, 2007 – For the record, Sammy Sosa isn’t a member of the FITS Fartknockers fantasy baseball team (which has reassumed its rightful place atop the Great Santini League standings, by the way). We wouldn’t draft cheaters like Sosa or Barry Bonds if our lives depended on it, and reading this morning’s Chicago Sun-Times we were reminded why that’s true. In a masterfully-written piece on Sammy Sosa’s 600th career dinger, columnist Jay Mariotti hits a home run of his own in articulating the popular frustration with our tarnished heroes:

As cameras flashed like lightning bolts and fireworks exploded in the sky, Sosa hit his 600th career home run Wednesday night, a milestone that may have been saluted by all Cubs fans if he hadn’t corked his bat, quit on the final day of his last season and left miserably as just another plastic hero from the Steroids Era.

Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs on hot dogs and beer. Hank Aaron hit 755 on sheer courage in the face of his racist critics. Sosa and Bonds can hit all the moon shots they want, but they don’t belong in the record books and they don’t belong in the soul of a game that has no room for cheaters.

UPDATE – How timely. Reuters is reporting this afternoon that New York Yankees’ slugger Jason Giambi will be testifying before the Mitchell committee investigating the use of steroids in Major League Baseball.
