GOVERNOR’S GIVE-BACK TO TAXPAYERS LEAVES A HELLUVA LOT TO BE DESIRED

FITSNews – June 21, 2007 – After five long years of charts, graphs, press stunts and near-incessant whining, S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford finally got income tax relief accomplished today. The only problem is the so-called “tax cut” is really a glorified social welfare program that devotes only $86 million out of a $1.7 billion budget surplus.

Sanford and the House flat got beat on income tax relief by the Senate, which insisted on an income tax reduction plan that returns a ludicrously small $66 back to each taxpayer. Of course in all fairness to the Senate, it wasn’t like the House’s plan would have done anything for South Carolina’s historically inept economy, either. Other states – including several run by Democrats – have been getting competitive by dramatically chopping their top marginal rates.

But not us. South Carolina’s Republican-controlled government just blew $7.4 billion dollars of your money, part of a 40% increase in state spending over the last four years, and your prize is a measly $66. Try not to spend it all in one place, people. Oh and governor, we look forward to you trying to take credit for this joke of a tax relief package … we’ve got some great images of Viagra bottles we’re pretty excited about posting.
