darfur protests

FITSNews – June 3, 2007 – When “Save Darfur” ends up on a Ryan Gosling T-Shirt at the MTV Music Awards, it’s safe to say that the “Hollywoodization” of the Sudanese conflict has reached a point of critical mass. And that was two years ago. Unfortunately, ending the humanitarian crisis that’s left approximately 400,000 dead and millions more displaced in the African nation is easier said on a T-Shirt than done in real life.

Just yesterday, the African Union rejected the latest peacekeeping proposal for the Darfur region because the United Nations (not the AU) would be in command of the 23,000-person force.

It’s the latest in a string of setbacks for the region, which has been unable to forge a lasting peace accord since the conflict began four years ago – in large part because Russia and China continue dumping weapons into the area in violation of a U.N. arms embargo. Of course try explaining that to Mia Farrow
