CANDIDATES CHUCKLE WATCHING SOUTH CAROLINA POLS FIGHT OVER SEATS AT PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

FITSNews – May 16, 2007 – We were late to the big 2008 GOP Presidential debate in Columbia tonight (we thought it was at the Kroger Center) so we missed what may go down as one of the funniest moments in South Carolina political history. Fortunately, our spies got there on time and witnessed the whole thing.

Apparently, when S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford arrived at the packed auditorium with his entourage, State Senators Hugh Leatherman and Harvey Peeler were occupying two of his reserved seats.

We’d like to report that Leatherman just hopped on the governor’s lap (where “big boys” get to sit) and that Peeler graciously allowed First Lady Jenny Sanford to sit in his lap, but it turns out the resolution of the seating snafu wasn’t so amicable. Ultimately, Sanford staffer Marisa Crawford had to play what one source described as “the toughie” and send the Senators back to the cheap seats. State Sen. Ronnie Cromer ended up with the best plan for getting a good seat, though, which consisted of knocking out U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (who for some reason hasn’t been given Secret Service protection yet), dragging him behind the curtain and taking his place onstage.
