Peyton Super Bowl

FITSNews – February 4, 2007 – In Week 13 of the 1986 NFL Season, a twelve year old boy named Sic Willie noticed that the Indianapolis Colts football team had not won a single game all year long. Figuring someone needed to pull for them, he decided to become a Colts fan.

Two decades later, that boy has become a man and the Indianapolis Colts finally won a Super Bowl Championship.

Come to think of it, that whole “boy becomes a man” thing isn’t exactly true. Any 32-year old who still wears jerseys and hoodies (or jerseys over hoodies) probably still has a little growing up to do.

Anyway, Sic Willie’s Colts are champions of the world, and rumor has it he’s already ordered his commemorative Super Bowl XLI jersey.

Special kudos go out to Tony Dungy, not only for becoming the first black head coach to win a Super Bowl, but also for the classy way in which he handled that distinction – basically saying he was just glad to be a Christian coach who won a Super Bowl. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, especially given what Dungy went through last year when his son James committed suicide a few weeks before the Colts’ playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Peyton Manning even referenced “everything Coach Dungy has been through” while on stage accepting the Vince Lombardi Trophy after the game.

Speaking of Peyton, kudos to a quarterback many said would never get to – let alone win – a Super Bowl Championship.

Not only does Manning finally have a ring, he’s got an MVP award to boot.

And finally, thank you to Kelvin Hayden, who returned a Rex Grossman interception 56 yards for the touchdown that sealed the win.

I think a special word of congratulations should go to the Bears, too. Not every team can make it through an entire Super Bowl without making ONE SINGLE INTERESTING PLAY.

Of course, this discounts the opening kickoff return. But what team wins after scoring on the opening play? It’s a kiss of death. If I were a special teams coach, once in a while I’d tell my players to let the guy run it for a t.d. It throws off the scoring team’s offense, who are just about to go onto the field when they have to sit down again.

But anyhow, are we sure that wasn’t, like, Grossman’s twin brother playing?

[…] FITSNews – May 14, 2007 – Yeah, this post is probably a little bit gratuitous, but as long-suffering fans of the Indianapolis Colts for the past twenty years this can only be described as our Year of Jubilee. […]
