FITSNews – January 21, 2007 – Somehow (we’re still trying to determine how, exactly), the FITS girls snagged invites to one of South Carolina’s swankiest A-list political parties, Friday evening’s retirement shindig for legendary newsman Lee Bandy.

And while we’re not going to spill all of the beans (sorry to disappoint), we did get Mr. Bandy’s permission in advance to stir the pot just a little bit.

Enter La Socialista humor columnist Neil White, who moments after telling FITSNews that we should “lay off The State,” took the podium to provide the evening’s entertainment.

White did a good job, too.

His performance was much edgier (and much funnier) than his typically bland, G-rated “Talk About Town” columns in La Socialista‘s Life & Style section.

He got in plenty of good-natured digs, including a great one at the expense of S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford, who is presumed to be crazy by those who don’t know him and known to be certifiable by those who do.

After acknowleding former Governors David Beasley and Jim Hodges – both of whom were in attendance – White turned to Sanford, who was unable to attend.

“Governor Sanford would have been here tonight,” White said. “But he had to head back home … to Neptune.”

The crowd erupted in laughter and applause.

But it was Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer, no doubt empowered by the considerable dent he put into the hors d’ouerves tray, who got the last laugh shortly before presenting Bandy with a well-deserved Order of the Palmetto on the governor’s behalf.

“The governor is very sorry he couldn’t be here tonight,” Sawyer said. “But as I’m sure Neil can tell you, it’s a long way back to Neptune.”
